Today, we tell the story of Nicholas Lam, who is a petrol head born in the 90s. He was born in Shenzhen, then got educated in Hong Kong, Shanghai and Canada when he was young. By the influence of his old man, he’s interested in automobile from very beginning. After settling down in America, he began to earn himself at nineteen. To raise money, he did a bunch of part time jobs, such as food delivery, salesman, even sell items on the roadside. The aim draws him to work while studying is to buy his favorite car. But his first experience of buying car on Craigslist wasn’t quite good, he bought this car at Pennsylvania. To his expectation, the car broke down after two weeks since he bought it. They can’t fix it, so it has been abandoned in the junk yard.
This experience makes Nicholas realize, Chinese students car buyers are easy to meet fraud if they aren’t experienced. After this, Nicholas began to learn how to distinguish used cars for his friends. From 2010 to 2011, he helped a lot of friends to check the car and finish the deal gratuitously, it brought him both experience and reputation in Stony Brook.
After 2011, he realized people around him asked him to help them distinguish cars every week, and this made him exhausted and he couldn’t take care all of these cases. Suddenly he thought why shouldn’t create a company for this service, so he could let people join him and help more people buy cars. September 2011, he decided build the company Auto Depot, then he provided service for customers to help them to buy their for only 300 bucks fee, including finding cars, checking and resigning them. This service will end after all this. This fabulous service mode made his company popular.
In 2013, after Nicholas finished his bachelor degree, he got a job in a Mercedes store, became a protégée of a 25-year- experienced salesman. During his working, he got some deeper knowledge of automobiles. 6 months later, he left this store and resigned Auto Depot New York.
Then Nicholas started recruiting, the three necessary requirements of hiring are honesty, politeness and solidarity. He supposed that Auto Depot should make foreign students get high quality cars with their budgets. So, besides selling, he also tried to share American car culture to Chinese students.
At the very beginning of this business, the company had only few employees, it was like some brotherhood, they can even share a bed each other. After they help more and more people buy their cars, this crew got bigger and bigger. The boss had to learn how to be a good boss. All of his crew were born form 1988 to 1997, so, to this young team, Nicholas was like their dean. He gotta deal all the details, and he cared about his employees’ moods and feelings. From one person to this 40-employee-company, Nicholas became a real boss from a petrolhead. Because of these young fellas’ efforts, Auto Depot was getting stronger.
August 2018, Auto Depot got its second moment, Nicholas and RWB cooperated for the 76th American RWB 993, the “Genki” 岩龜, this name was actually because, when he was dining with Nakai San, they ordered a course of turtle, Nakai San thought it was delicious, so they use Japanese word of turtle, “Genki”, as its name.
His first impression of RWB came from 2015, in the game Need For Speed. The first moment he met RWB car in the game, he thought it’s so cool and special, he would like to own one of this. The he waited 8 month for meeting Nakai San. The lacquer Acid Green came from the Original Porsche 918. They also used this color on the break calipers and the roll cage. They used Work S1 rim as Nakai’s suggestion, size 335 for rear and 265 for front. Suspension is from Aragosta, Break is from Rolloface. They emptied the whole interior, then cover the inside with alcantara, from roof to floor. The only kept the original dashboard, other then that, they customized all. They even used the Acid Green line for sewing. The seats are from Ricaro, exhaust is from Fadspeed. There was a tiny mistake: the logo on the exhaust pipe was on the wrong side, they have to reverse it to make it fixed.
